Q. What are the benefits of having a health check with Amethyst Health Screening (AHS)?

A. We send out a health questionnaire to you before your appointment so that during your appointment you get personal attention and the health check can be tailored to your individual needs. We aim to make you feel relaxed and at ease from the second you walk into the room. We introduce ourselves and explain everything we are going to do and why we are doing it. You have your tests and then you get your results and a report immediately which is also explained fully. We give simple suggestions that are achievable no matter what the results are and we aim to inform, reassure and motivate. You will leave us understanding the role cholesterol has in our body - you might be surprised! We also explain about blood pressure, heart rate is and other positive things you can do to improve your health and lower your risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. After all, knowledge is power! We genuinely care about your health and really want to help everyone to have the best health possible. We know from personal experience how individual health can change overnight and our desire is to help people avoid health problems wherever possible. We want to help and motivate everyone to better health in a non-judgemental, friendly way. We treat each person as an individual the way we would like to be treated. We take a holistic approach when treating our patients. Our Health Checks are priced competitively and there are no hidden costs to surprise you once your health screening is done. We want to help you be the best you can be...simply. back to questions    back to menu

Q. Are Amethyst Health checks similar to NHS health checks?

A. Our health checks are similar to NHS health checks and we use the same cardiovascular disease assessment tool as the NHS. The QRISK2 assessment tool looks at age, sex, cholesterol/HDL ratio, blood pressure, diabetes, smoking status, self-assigned ethnicity, family history of premature coronary heart disease (angina, heart attack) in a first degree relative under the age of 60, deprivation, blood pressure treatment, BMI, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Chronic Kidney Disease and Atrial Fibrillation. QRISK2 then puts all of these figures together and assesses the chances of you having a heart attack or stroke in the next ten years in terms of percentage and also looks at your heart age. back to questions    back to menu

Q. What are the differences between Amethyst Health Screening checks and NHS health checks?

A. NHS health checks are only for people between the ages of 40 and 74. The NHS aim to invite those over 40 for a health check every five years. QRISK2 tool looks at those between the ages of 25 and 84, so we screen everyone between those ages rather than just over 40's. For those adults under 25 our software shows the risk to the person as if they were 25, which is a helpful tool so under 25’s don’t get left out. The NHS doesn’t give health checks to people who have pre-existing vascular diseases like chronic kidney disease and other vascular diseases, whereas AHS do since QRISK2 allows for that. Depending on the area you have your NHS health screen, you may have to go in advance of your health check to have your blood pressure and bloods taken. We do your checks, BMI, blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose during your appointment and give you the results there and then, so you don’t have to make several return visits for tests, checks and results. back to questions    back to menu

Q. What if I'm on statins for high cholesterol or meds for high blood pressure?

A. If you are on statins for high cholesterol we can't do a QRISK2 cardiovascular assessment on you because being on statins isn't included in the QRISK2 tool and therefore it will not give you accurate results. However we can do the same checks on your cholesterol, blood pressure and glucose and look at your present health status in our software and show you what risk areas you should aim at lowering without using the QRISK2 algorithm. You will get the same fact sheets and information booklets as everyone else and a report with your results. If you are on meds for high blood pressure then we can still carry out the cardiovascular risk assessment on you. back to questions    back to menu

Q. What if I only want my cholesterol, glucose and blood pressure checked?

A. We do cholesterol and glucose checks which are ideal for people who want to monitor their levels every few months but don’t want the extra cost of a cardiovascular risk assessment. If you are on statins we can still test your cholesterol and if you are on medication to lower your blood pressure we can still check it. It is a good way to see how your levels are and we can explain what they should be too. The test strips we use test Total Cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and glucose at the same time, so there is no added cost for having the three tests together. back to questions    back to menu

Q. I feel ok, so why should I have a health MOT?

A. Many health problems such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol can be symptomless. In fact 2 out of 3 people have raised cholesterol and it's estimated more than 1 in 4 people have high blood pressure with over 7million people being unaware of it. Although an individual may feel perfectly alright, many health problems such as high blood pressure are called the 'silent killers', because you could have it without realising it and high blood pressure and high cholesterol increases the risk of a heart attack or stroke. Prevention is definitely better than cure (we say this a lot!) and our aim is to address these silent killers and help you to lower your personal cardiovascular risk. An incredible 80-90% of premature cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack and stroke are preventable by making small changes to your lifestyle! back to questions    back to menu

Q. I’m slim/fit/healthy so why should I have a health screening?

A. Being fit and eating a healthy diet are excellent ways to lower cardiovascular risk and lower the risk of diabetes. However some risk factors are hereditary and it is always good to get checked out. Some people have familial hypercholesterolaemia which makes someone predisposed to very high cholesterol even if they are exercising and eating a healthy diet. Being slim does not mean you have low cholesterol or low blood pressure. In fact some people are very slim but have visceral fat surrounding their internal organs which increases the risk of diabetes. The term to describe this is TOFI – thin on the outside, fat on the inside. We screen people that are very fit and eat a healthy diet but have an irregular heartbeat and are totally unaware of it. An irregular heartbeat increases the risk of heart attack and stroke from blood clots. back to questions    back to menu

Q. What are the benefits of having a health screening before the age of 40?

A. Having a health screening as early as possible in life and learning about any risk factors you may have, can help you to lower your risk of having a heart attack, stroke or diabetes. Looking after your cardiovascular health and lowering the risk of diabetes can also help lower the chance of developing cancer. If you have risks, avoiding the issues, not learning about them or waiting to see what happens will not make them go away. Addressing risks now can help lower the risk of having a heart attack, stroke and diabetes and will help you to live as long as possible and could even save your life in the long run. back to questions    back to menu

Q. Will I have privacy?

A. We allow people privacy whether screenings are done at our clinic or at your work premises. We never screen two people at the same time in the same space – that way you have our total attention. back to questions    back to menu

Q. Are there any hidden costs?

A. No, the idea of our screening process is to help make people aware of any problems they may have but also motivate people to better health with non-judgemental advice. We have found this works very well.  If someone has high blood pressure or high cholesterol for example we will refer that individual to their GP as part of our service. In the corporate setting, if anyone would like a follow up appointment with us rather than their GP, say in three to six months to see how they are doing, companies can choose to fund that if they wish or the employee can fund it themselves and come to our clinic at their convenience. back to questions    back to menu

Q. For corporate screening, does the employer receive a report on each individual’s health?

A. No. However, we can generate a summary report highlighting the general trends within your company. back to questions    back to menu

Q. Do we offer any other services not mentioned on this webpage?

A. We give presentations on health advice and cardiovascular disease. If this is something you would like us to arrange please let us know. back to questions    back to menu

Q. Can we carry out health checks for new staff?

A. Yes – if you have a few starting at your company at the same time we can come to you to do the tests but if it just one person here or there we would ask them to come to our clinic. back to questions    back to menu

Q. Are there any special requirements for a health screening?

A. Just a two hour fasting period to avoid high sugar levels when the blood test is performed. back to questions    back to menu

Q. How is the screening organised?

A. We ask you to nominate a screening coordinator at your company that we can liaise with. We send out an appointment time slot sheet to you and your employees to fill in so that everyone is aware of what time their appointment is and when they should fast. We send out a questionnaire and instruction sheet to your employees for them to read and fill in and we ask that they be sent back to us.  This ensures the screening is carried out in an organised way. We will be prepared for each individual screening and can give the person our full attention. back to questions    back to menu

Q. Are there people that can’t have a health screening?

A. Pregnant women or women that are breast feeding can’t be screened due to a natural increase in cholesterol levels which will give inaccurate results. Cholesterol levels return to normal about 4weeks after giving birth if the mother is not breast feeding. We do not do a cardiovascular risk assessment on over 84’s because QRISK2 does not allow for that, but we can check a person’s cholesterol, glucose and blood pressure independent of a cardiovascular risk assessment. back to questions    back to menu

Q. Will you share my details with anyone else?

A. Your data is protected and the only third party that will see your details is your GP with your permission. back to questions    back to menu
